Technology modern workplaces use

Recently, we wrote an article that explained why businesses resist new technologies and that has actually inspired us to list some of the latest and greatest technologies that can help change how you, your employees, and business works. Not all of these ideas may be relevant to your specific industry, but it is certainly worth cherry picking the ones you believe can add true value.

Consultancy

Hold up here.. Consultancy? This is nothing new, consultancy has been going on for ages you might say. And whilst that might be true, what advice you may have received a couple of years ago may not be relevant to your business today. Technology changes, rapidly and thus so does the information IT professionals prescribe to organisations. What we’re trying to say here is, always ask an expert. More often or not, they can save you money in the long run when it comes to recommendations.

VDI / DaaS

VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) and DaaS (Desktop as a service) can really change how the work place works. Let’s start off with the in house aspect. With a virtualised environment, you no longer have to worry about expensive equipment, breakdowns, fire, theft etc. Instead you get a desktop that looks and feels exactly like a real computer. And as an added benefit, VDI/DaaS can usually work on any device as long as it’s connected to the internet. Perfect for businesses that have adapted a work from home approach for their employees. And the beauty of it? You get to pick up your work exactly as you left it, even if you a different device, a perfect excuse for leaving your business laptop in the office from now on!

Virtual Private Servers

Hands up, who likes their server room? Nobody? We didn’t think so either. Server rooms used to be the ‘dungeon’ for the business, it was an area that was old, complex, dusty, and for some an area where one should not go exploring. Unfortunately, servers are the beating heart for a business IT infrastructure, and if that breaks down you have to endure the consequences.  However, as you have guessed, there is an alternative, a virtual private server (vps). A VPS does exactly what your server would do, only it is being held in the cloud. So that means more space (no need for a server room anymore, no need for call out costs and no need for expensive equipment. Sounds pretty good right?

Online backup

So you’re probably think this is obvious, but realistically this is an issue that keeps on failed to be addressed. Businesses NEED to use ONLINE backup services. There is a reason we highlight the word need, and that is because to many businesses use either an external hard drive, local servers, or not back up at all. Now that’s all well and good if you use a local device, but imagine a scenario where your local computer breaks and your server breaks and your external hard drive is missing critical files. You’re in a bit trouble now aren’t you? Online backups, usually run in the background and will usually have the very latest versions of your file backed up automatically. So when you’re working on that 100-page report and your computer breaks down, you can retrieve your very latest version, rather than start all over again. It’s also worth noting that one of the common reasons why businesses do not have a proper backup system in place is due to a lack of time, or forgetfulness. Online backups solve this problem for you.
